Objective

Environmental Engineering Laboratory is under the program of Civil Engineering in Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Macau. The laboratory can serve students for experimental study in 4-year Bachelor Degree Program and research activities in Final Year Projects. The laboratory can contribute its pilot study facilities and chemical analytical equipment as well as experimental technology to the environmental studies and continuing learning in the environmental professions in Macau.

Facilities

Air Quality

– Custom-built Raman system
Approch the effects of anthropogenic and marine aerosol inorganic salts on the aqueous-phase photolysis of atmospheric nitro-phenolic compounds.

– Q-Trak IAQ Monitor
Measure the temperature(T), relative humidity(RH), the amount of carbon dioxide(CO2) and carbon monoxide(CO) in air.

– CO Analyzer, NO-NO2-NOX Analyzer
Measure the amount of carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides in ambient air.

– Sound Level Meter
Measure/assess environmental and workplace noise.

Water Quality

– Turbidimeter
Measure turbidity of water in the field or around the plant.

– Dissolved oxygen meter
Measure dissolved oxygen of water in laboratory or in the field.

– pH Meter
Measure the pH value, conductivity, TDS, Salinity, ORP of water in laboratory or on field site.

– BOD Incubator, Light Incubator Shaker
Used to maintain temperature or simulate natural light conditions for test tissue cultivation, plant growth group cultivation, microorganism, anti-biological cultivation and preservation, and other constant temperature and light experiments.

– Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) Reactor
Used for sample digesting for measurment of the total nitrogen(TN), total phosphorus(TP) and the organic strength of domestic and industrial wastes(in terms of COD).

– UV-Vis Spectrophotometer
Used in analytical chemistry for the quantitative determination of different analytes, specially for those with the most pre-programmed testing methods that make use of HACH chemicals and procedures.

Waste Water Treatment

– Vacuum Filtration System
Used primarily in isolating/collectting a desired solid from a suspension (SS)

– Drying Oven
Used in laboratory for a variety of tasks including evaporation, sterilization, chemicals/apparatus drying, SS and TDS determination.

– Muffle furnace
Used in laboratory for sample ashing, ignition test, and VSS determination.

– Analytical Balance
Weighing samples as well as reagents precisely for determination of SS, VSS, TDS, density, equivalent weight of some substances and solution preparation.

– Settling Column for Analyzing Discrete Particles
Used to determine the terminal settling velocities of discrete particles and the total removal efficiency of the sedimentation.

– Activated Sludge Sewage-Treatment Pilot Plant
Demonstrate the traditional single-stage sewage treatment process and the effects of MLSS, pH value, temperature, organic load, oxygen flow rate, and permanence time of the feed sludge to sewage treatment efficiency

– Up-flow SBR Reactor
Used to degrade antibiotics such as tetracycline and sulfadiazine using granular sludge process.

– Anaerobic Digester
Used to degrade organic matter such as sewage sludge and food wastes to produce methane and volatile fatty acids using anaerobic sludge process.

Water Treatment

– Jar Tester
Used to show the optimum concentration of coagulant or alkali necessary to assure accurate flocculation in wastewater/potable water treatment.

– Water Filtration Pilot Plant
Demonstrate the general portable water treatment process, and provide the following educational program: mechanical filtration, chemical filtration, main parameters affecting filtration, feed flow influence on filtration.

Sampling

– Sludge Collector, Deep Water Sampler (Barrel/Bottle)

Sample Storage

– Freezers(-80℃, -20℃), Explosion-Proof Refrigerator(4℃)
Used for long-term storage of chemical and biological samples at low temperatures.

Cleaning

– Ultrasonic cleaner
Used to clean many different types of objects, including metals, glass, rubber, ceramics and some hard plastics.
